Denmark was invaded by Germany in 1940, during World War II. It remained under German occupation until the very end of the war in 1945.

Summary

During World War II, Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany in April 1940. The Danish government initially cooperated with the German occupation, seeking to maintain a degree of autonomy. However, this policy of collaboration became increasingly untenable as the war progressed.

In 1943, the Danish government collapsed and the king and government went into exile in Sweden. Nazi Germany then took direct control of Denmark, instituting harsh measures against the Danish population. This included the deportation of the country's Jewish population, many of whom were able to flee to Sweden with the help of the Danish resistance movement.

The German occupation devastated Denmark economically and socially. However, the country was eventually liberated in 1945 by Allied forces. In the postwar period, Denmark transitioned to a parliamentary democracy and later became a founding member of NATO, while also developing its social welfare policies. The occupation years left a lasting mark on Danish national identity and its relationship with Germany.

Establishment

  • April 1940: Lasting approximately four hours, the German ground campaign against Denmark was one of the shortest military operations of the Second World War.
  • May 1940: After the occupation of Denmark, British forces from 12 April 1940 made a pre-emptive bloodless invasion of the Faroe Islands to prevent their occupation by German troops.
