Summary
During the Time of Troubles, a period of dynastic struggle and foreign intervention in Russia after the extinction of the Rurik dynasty, Polish and Swedish armies intervened, installing rival claimants to the Russian throne. A council of boyars briefly took control in 1610, but was soon driven out by a nationalist uprising led by the Moscow patriarch. In 1613, the Zemsky Sobor elected Michael Romanov as the new czar, establishing the Romanov dynasty that would rule Russia for the next 300 years.
