Bohemia emerged as a duchy around 870 AD, the first form of the modern-day Czech State. It was a vassal of the Frankish Empire until 962 when East Francia became the Holy Roman Empire, of which Bohemia initially was not part of.

    1. Hungarian invasions of Europe


    The Magyars (or Hungarians) successfully conquered the Carpathian Basin (corresponding to the later Kingdom of Hungary) by the end of the ninth century, and launched a number of plundering raids thoughout Europe.
