January 829: The last decade of Ludwig's reign was thus marked by civil war. In 829 Ludovico I decided to remove some territories assigned to Ludovico II and to give them to Charles, unleashing a civil war which then subsided only because the aristocracy had no interest in carrying it forward. In 830, the three brothers invaded their father's lands, forcing him to abdicate in favor of Lothair, and thus Ludovico and Giuditta were confined to a monastery. But Ludovico regained power the following year and Lothair was deprived not only of the imperial title, but also of the kingdom of Italy, which was assigned to Charles. Pepin revolted, followed by Louis the German in 832 and Lothair, with the support of Pope Gregory IV, joined the revolt in 833 and had him deposed in the assembly of Compiègne by the Archbishop of Reims Ebbone. The brothers defeated their father and imprisoned him with Charles. Judith was sent to a convent, while Pepin and Louis the German annexed previously imperial lands. In 834, however, Lothair was forced to flee to Italy and the following year the family made peace, re-establishing Louis the Pious on the imperial throne. On 28 February 835 Louis was reconsecrated in a solemn ceremony in the Cathedral of Metz by his half-brother Bishop Drogone of Metz.
