December 410: Alaric left Rome in early autumn, to head for southern Italy: he was carrying with him, as well as enormous wealth, also a precious hostage, the sister of the emperor Honorius, Galla Placidia. He died a few months later in Calabria, being buried with all his treasure in the bed of the Busento river.
January 411: The Visigoths, having elected Ataulf as king, then marched north, heading for southern Gaul. The devastation caused during the march was enormous, to the point that in 412 Honorius granted the devastated provinces of Southern Italy a reduction in taxes.
