Chronology

Interactive Chronologies with maps are available in the section Changes Navigation

  • January 408: Subsequently, when a policy of anti-Germanization of the Eastern Roman army was followed in Constantinople, with a consequent purge of the barbarian soldiers of the army, Alaric, realizing that he was no longer accepted in the East, decided to invade Italy with all his people , in order to force the Western Emperor Honorius to allow the Goths to settle as foederati in a province of the Western Empire. His initial attacks (in 402 and 403) were repulsed by the Roman general Stilicho, but after the latter's fall into disgrace and killing (408), Alaric was able to successfully invade the peninsula without finding opposition, even managing to sack Rome in 410.
