Chronology

  • January 712: Ansprando managed to raise an army in Bavaria and descended on Italy. The battle, which lasted until nightfall, had an uncertain outcome. Aripert seemed to have the upper hand, so much so that the Bavarians were on the point of abandoning the field, but he made the serious mistake of returning immediately to Pavia. His soldiers, offended by what they considered an act of cowardice, abandoned him and Aripert died while trying to escape. Ansprando was then acclaimed king, strong both of the support of those who had not appreciated the usurpation of Ragimpert and Aripert II against Liutpert, and of that of the partisans of Aripert themselves, conquered by his charisma. He immediately associated his son Liutprand to the throne who succeeded him when he died just three months later.
