January 1978: 1978-1979: The Nicaraguan Revolution describes a period of Nicaraguan history in which the dictatorship of the Somoza clan was overthrown with numerous victims. The fighting took place in 1978 and 1979. However, the period of social upheaval that followed, which lasted until 1990, is often referred to as the Nicaraguan revolution.
