The Qajar family took full control of Iran in 1794, deposing Lotf 'Ali Khan, the last Shah of the Zand dynasty, and re-asserted Iranian sovereignty over large parts of the Caucasus.

  • January 1794: Karim Khan's death plunged the country into a series of civil wars and succession disputes, with many members of the Zand dynasty ascending the Peacock Throne within just ten years. Agha Muhammad took the opportunity to launch a rebellion which, in 1794, led to the capture of Lotf Ali Khan, the last Zand ruler. Two years later he proclaimed himself Shahanshah (King of Kings).
