  • January 817: His aggressive policy reached its climax with the fight against his nephew Bernard, king of Italy, son of his late brother Pepin. In 817 Bernard rebelled against Louis for being deprived of his rightful position as king of Italy. In 818 Ludovico, after the repression of the revolt, had Bernardo imprisoned and blinded, who died after three days of atrocious suffering.
