January 748: In that same year, Pippin freed his half-brother Griffon from the prison in which Carloman had locked him up. He took refuge in Bavaria where his uncle, his mother's brother, the Duke of Bavaria, Odilone I had died. Griffin, advancing dynastic claims (as the son of a Bavarian princess, Swanachilde), usurped the throne from Tassilo III, a 7-year-old boy, and with Lanfred's help subjugated the Bavarians. Knowing this, Pepin went to Bavaria and, having captured Grifone and Lanfredo, took them with him after having reconfirmed his nephew Tassilone on the ducal throne.
