  • June 1820: June 15, 1820 - March 1821: On 15 June a popular revolt broke out in Sicily, and on 2 July riots also broke out in Naples by officers of the armed forces. The sovereign was forced to sign a constitution, and appoint his son Francesco as his vicar, while a provisional government was installed in Palermo, repressed in November by the constitutional government of Naples. Only in March 1821 was Naples occupied by Austrian troops who re-established the Bourbon absolutist monarchy and Ferdinand withdrew the constitution.
  • August 1820: In July 1820 a military revolt broke out under General Guglielmo Pepe, and Ferdinand was terrorised into signing a constitution on the model of the Spanish Constitution of 1812.
