December 1930: December 22, 1930 - August 1931: The aim of the rebellion was to restore the traditional "old order". Their real causes, however, were economic in nature. The global economic crisis led to a sharp decline in travel income, which endangered the livelihoods of smallholders. [...] The uprising broke out on December 22, 1930 in the southern district of Tanintharyi. Saya San had himself crowned "King of Burma" [...] Saya San escaped to the Shan States, where he was captured in August 1931.
