  • January 412: While in the north the death of Constantine III left a free hand to the Burgundians and Alani along the Rhenish frontier. These (led respectively by Gundicaro and Goar) incited the legions stationed in the region to proclaim general Giovino emperor in Mainz, to whom the Visigoths of Ataulfo tried to join. Relations between Jovinus and the Visigoths turned into open hostility when Jovinus raised his brother Sebastian to the rank of Augustus despite the lack of consent of the Visigothic king, who sent a message to Honorius promising to send him the heads of the usurpers in exchange for peace. Honorius accepted the agreement and Ataulf defeated and captured the two usurpers, whose heads, once decapitated, were sent to Ravenna.
