January 551: During 551 the Visigothic kingdom was struck by a serious civil war: a pretender to the throne, Atanagild, had in fact risen up against the legitimate king Agila I, asking for military aid from the Eastern Roman Empire to overthrow the legitimate sovereign. Justinian agreed, intending to take advantage of the civil war between the Visigoths to wrest territories from them in southern Spain. He gave command of the expedition to Liberius, who invaded southern Spain in support of Atanagild. On the progress of the war the chronicles of the time are not very detailed, but around 555 the civil war ended with the killing of Agila and the accession to the throne of Atanagildo.
