Were a series of civil wars that took place in Spain during the 19th century. The Carlists advocated for Infante Carlos of Spain, Count of Molina, a pretender to the throne and brother of the deceased Ferdinand VII as the daughter of Ferdinand had become Queen instead.

1. First Carlist War


29 September 1833 - 6 July 1840: fought between two factions over the succession to the throne and the nature of the Spanish monarchy: the conservative supporters of the late king's brother, Carlos de Borbón (or Carlos V), became known as Carlists (carlistas), while the progressive supporters of the regent, Maria Christina, acting for Isabella II of Spain, were called Liberals (liberales).

  • 2. Second Carlist War


    Was a civil war in Spain that saw the Carlists (a political movement aimed at establishing an alternative branch of the Bourbon dynasty on the Spanish throne) against the Spanish government.

  • October 1846: September 1846 - May 1849: Some historians consider it a direct Catalan revolt against Madrid, fought primarily in Catalonia by the Carlists under General Ramón Cabrera against the forces of the government of Isabella II. The uprising began in September 1846 and continued until May 1849, spreading to Galicia.

  • 3. Third Carlist War


    21 April 1872 - 28 February 1876: Leading up to the war, Queen Isabella II abdicated the throne in 1868, and the unpopular Amadeo I, son of the King of Italy, was proclaimed King of Spain in 1870. In response, the Carlist pretender, Carlos VII, tried to earn the support of various Spanish regions.
