Chronology

  • April 307: Constantine I, with the onset of spring, planned a new campaign in Germanic territory. During the military operations, in fact, he obtained important successes, managing to heavily beat the Franks who had invaded the Roman territories west of the Reno river the previous year.
  • January 308: New successes were achieved by Constantine against the Bructeri during the year, so much so that he again deserved the title of Germanicus maximus.
  • January 310: Constantine still obtained important military successes over the Alemanni and Franks, of which it is said he managed to capture their kings, fed to the wild beasts during the gladiatorial games.
  • January 313: Constantine, in this same period, led a new military campaign against the Franks and Alamans in Gaul which lasted until the summer of that year.
  • January 320: The eldest son of Constantine, Crispo (then fifteen, and therefore supported by a prefect), once he obtained the military command of Gaul, conducted military campaigns along the Rhine limes, reporting his first victories against the Franks and the Alamanni, precisely in this same year.
  • January 324: During these two years new military campaigns were conducted against the federation of the Alamanni by the son of Constantine I, Crispo, so much so that the coinage celebrated the Alamannia devicta. Constantine continued to use as his favorite imperial residences, in addition to Serdica and Sirmium, also Nicomedia.
  • January 328: 328-332: Once again Constantine I, together with his son Constantine II was forced to intervene along the upper Rhine to beat the Alemanni who had attempted to invade the territories of Gaul. The war seems to have lasted several years, given that the emperor's sons could boast the title of Alamannicus maximus, only in 331/332.

  • 1. Campaign of Constantine against the Sarmatians

Was a military campaign by Roman Emperor Constantine I against the Sarmatian tribes.

  • January 333: In 332, a treaty was signed between the Roman Empire and the Goths Thervingi and Sarmatians in the region of modern-day Romania. The treaty aimed to establish peaceful relations and cooperation between the parties involved.
  • January 335: During the years 331-336 Constantine led his armies beyond the lower course of the Danube returning to occupy, about 60 years after Aurelian, a part of the territories of southern Dacia.
  • January 317: Constantine fought against the Sarmatians of the Limes Pannonicus tract, obtaining the victorious title of Sarmaticus maximus for the first time.
  • January 322: Constantine managed to repel a new invasion of Pannonia by the Sarmatians Iazyges.

  • 2. Campaign of Constantiuns against the Goths

Was a military campaign by Roman Emperor Constantine I against the Goths.

  • January 323: The Goths of Rausimodo also decided to cross the Istro (much further downstream) and tried to devastate the Roman territories of lower Moesia and Thrace.
  • January 329: The following year, always along the front of the lower Danube, the Goths returned to agitation, once again managing to penetrate as far as lower Moesia and Thrace, where they brought devastation; but this time too Constantine managed to repel the barbarian hordes.
