  • January 1466: In 1465, the city of Tuggurt came under the rule of the Sultanate of Tuggurt, which was established in the 15th century. The territory was previously under the authority of the Hafsid dynasty, like other cities in eastern Algeria.

    1. Conquests of Suleiman I (Ottoman)


    Conquests and wars with Ottoman involvement during the rule of Suleiman I.

  • November 1552: Salah Raïs, bey of Algiers, led an expedition against Tuggurt in 1552. The Ben Djellab surrendered in the face of enemy artillery; politically they became vassals of Algiers and paid it tribute.

  • 2. French conquest of Algeria


    Was the French conquest of Algeria. It begun with the French sizing Algiers and other coastal territories of Algeria in 1830. Due to the Algerian resistance, France had slowly to conquer the interior of Algeria over the next 100 years.

  • May 1837: After French imperial forces sustained heavy losses and military reversals in Algeria, the French signed with Abdelkader the Treaty of Tafna in May 1837. The treaty gave the Emir the provinces of Oran, Titteri and part of the province of Algiers.

  • January 1560: In 1559, the Kingdom of Ait Abbas gained control of Touggourt. El Hadj Khichan el Merbaï, a member of the loyal Hachem tribe, was appointed as Sheikh of Touggourt by the Kingdom.
