    1. Football War


    Was a brief military conflict fought between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969.

  • July 1969: In 1969, during the Football War between El Salvador and Honduras, Colonel Méndez led a battalion to occupy the towns of Alianza, El Amatillo, Goascorán, Aramecina, and Caridad.
  • July 1969: Dubón's forces gave way, and by evening the Salvadorans had already penetrated about five miles into Honduras, occupying Ocotepeque and San Marcos in Ocotepeque Department, as well as Cololaca, Junigual, Guarita, Valladolid and La Virtud in Lempira Department.
  • July 1969: The Salvadorans secured control of Ocotepeque and the nearby towns of San Marcos and La Labor.
  • July 1969: Also on the southern front, the situation for El Salvador had changed diametrically. The Honduran counteroffensive pushed the enemy back beyond the El Amatillo frontier.
  • August 1969: On August 5, Salvadoran troops withdrew within their borders, ending the Football War.

  • September 1896: In 1896, El Salvador, under the leadership of President Rafael Zaldívar, formed a short-lived union with Honduras and Nicaragua called the Greater Republic of Central America. This union aimed to strengthen the region's political and economic power but ultimately dissolved due to internal conflicts and power struggles.

  • November 1898: In 1898, El Salvador gained independence from the United Provinces of Central America and became a sovereign nation.
