January 1258: The Sultanate of Ternate, previously also known as The Kingdom of Gapi is one of the oldest Muslim kingdoms in Indonesia besides Tidore, Jailolo, and Bacan. The Sultanate of Ternate was established by Momole Ciko, the first leader of Ternate, with the title Baab Mashur Malamo, in 1257.

1. Dutch conquest of the Banda Islands

Was a process of military conquest from 1609 to 1621 by the Dutch East India Company of the Banda Islands.

May 1616: Ai conquered by netherlands.

March 1621: The Dutch occupied Lontor and entire Banda Archipelago, suffering six dead and 27 wounded.

January 1523: The Portuguese were permitted to build a fort on the island, today known as Kastella, construction of which began in 1522, but relations between the Ternateans and Portuguese were strained from the start.

January 1523: The Portuguese were permitted to build a fort (Kastella) on the island.

January 1576: Following the 1575 Ternatean invasion, Bacan, an island in Indonesia, became subservient to the Sultanate of Ternate. This relationship was solidified through marriages between the ruling families of Bacan and Ternate.

January 1576: When Sultan Hairun was murdered and his head exhibited on a pike in 1570, Muslim Ternateans rebelled against the Portuguese who were besieged in their castle until 1575 when a new Sultan made the castle his palace.

January 1576: Following the murder of Sultan Hairun at the hands of the Portuguese, the Ternateans expelled the Portuguese from Kastella in 1575 after a five-year siege.

January 1579: Tidore was under Dutch colonial rule from 1578.

January 1584: The peak of Ternate's power came near the end of the 16th century, under Sultan Baabullah (1570-1583), when it had influence over most of the eastern part of Sulawesi, the Ambon and Seram area, Timor island, parts of southern Mindanao and as well as parts of Papua.

January 1601: Establishment of the Adonara Principality.

January 1607: Spanish forces captured the former Portuguese fort from the Ternatese.

January 1607: The Spaniards launched a major attack on Ternate from their Philippines base in 1606. This was successful, the power of Ternate was curbed, and Tidore was allowed to take over certain Ternatan dependencies.

January 1620: Expansion of the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia by 1619.

January 1664: The Spaniards, led by Governor-General Diego de Salcedo, abandoned Ternate and Tidore in 1663.

January 1671: The Kingdom of Bolaang Mongondow was founded in 1670 AD by a Mongondow prince Datu Loloda Mokoagow.

January 1684: Vassalisation of the Sultanate of Ternate by Dutch.

January 1798: After several shifts Nuku allied with the British, who were at war with the Dutch after 1795 and were in the process of conquering Dutch colonial possessions. In 1797 he captured Bacan and then Tidore itself, expelling the VOC-backed Sultan Kamaluddin.
