Establishment
January 1209: Saalfeld received city rights in 1208 as the fourth place in Thuringia. The town charter was confirmed in 1208 by the Schwarzburgers, who at that time were the feudal lords of the Saalfeld area.

Disestablishment
January 1390: In 1389, Saalfeld was transferred from the Schwarzburg family to the Wettin family, specifically to the Margraviate of Meissen. The Wettins ruled over Saalfeld until the monarchy was abolished in 1918.
