Establishment
January 821: By the early 8th century, before the unification of Norway, several chiefdoms/kingdoms existed in Norway and Sweden. People lived relatively scattered on farms but institutions that bound villages and regions together existed.

January 873: The Battle of Hafrsfjorden (dated sometime in the late 8th century) is traditionally considered the event when Harald Hårfagre won over the petty kings and chieftains of Norway and thus unified the country.
