January 1877: The Cape colony declares a protectorate over the Herero.
January 1881: The protectorate of the Cape Colony over Damara and Herero is disestablished.
October 1885: In 1885, William Worthington Jordan bought a tract (fifty thousand square kilometers) of land from the Ovambo chief Kambonde for three hundred pounds. Here he established the Republic of Upingtonia on 20 October 1885.
October 1885: Herero is annexed to German South West Africa.
