Establishment


  • January 1514: In 1513, Dengella Koli led a strong force of Fulani and Mandinka into Futa Toro, seizing it from the Jolof and setting up his dynasty.

  • January 1550: In 1549, Kayor successfully broke from the Jolof Empire under the leadership of the crown prince Amari Ngoone Sobel Fall.

  • January 1777: In 1776, Denanke was defeated by Abd-el-Kadr Toorodi, Almami of Futa Toro, leading to Islamic Fulbe rule in the region.

  • January 1801: During the 19th century, Portuguese explorers and traders established settlements along the rivers of Guinea, including Bissau, Cacheu, and Ziguinchor. These settlements were key points for trade and colonization in Portuguese Guinea, now known as Guinea Bissau.

  • January 1826: In the Franco-Trarzan War of 1825, the French started to assert control of the mouth of the Senegal river against the rival state of Trarza.

  • January 1849: The Toucouleur Empire was established in 1848.
