  • Chronology

Interactive Chronologies with maps are available in the section Changes Navigation

    1. Qatari-Bahraini War

Was an armed conflict that took place between 1867 and 1868 in the Persian Gulf. The conflict pitted Bahrain and Abu Dhabi against the people of Qatar.

  • May 1868: On 6 September 1868, Ali al Khalifa effectively took control of Bahrain as hakim after Colonel Pelly appointed him.

  • 2. Further events (Unrelated to Any War)

  • January 1784: Al-Muḥarraq passed to the control of the Āl Khalīfah dynasty in 1783 with the rest of Bahrain.

  • January 1796: The Saudi defeated the Bani Khalid in 1795.

  • January 1803: In 1783 Bahrain together with Qatar, under the leadership of the Banū Uṭub tribe, rebelled against the Āl Makhtūr and became definitively independent from the Persians. Independence was short-lived, however, and the archipelago was conquered by the Sultanate of Oman, then in its heyday, in 1802.

  • January 1812: Said bin Sultan, ruler of Muscat, capitalised on this opportunity and raided the Wahhabi garrisons on the eastern coast, setting fire to the fort in Zubarah. The Al Khalifa were effectively returned to power thereafter.

  • January 1823: In 1822 a new revolt, this time led by the Al Khalīfa family, restored the independence of the Khalifa state in Bahrain.

  • January 1826: In 1825, the House of Thani was established with Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani as the first leader.

  • January 1893: The treaties of 1880 and 1892 effectively turned Bahrain into a British protectorate, giving the British control over defence and foreign relations.

  • November 1916: By the Anglo-Turkish Convention of 1913, the Ottomans agreed to renounce their claim to Qatar and withdraw their garrison from Doha. However, with the outbreak World War I, nothing was done to carry this out, although its numbers dwindled as men deserted. In 1915, with the presence of British gunboats in the harbour, Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani (who was pro-British) persuaded the remainder to abandon the fort and, when British troops approached the following morning, they found it deserted. Qatar became a British protectorate on 3 November 1916, when the United Kingdom signed a treaty with Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani.
