Establishment


  • January 1651: The Barotse, also known as the Lozi people, established their kingdom along the Zambezi River in the 17th Century. By 1650, their territory extended from Southern Rhodesia to the Congo and from Angola to the Kafue River.

  • January 1701: Libupe first ruler.

  • January 1741: In 1740, migrants from the Lunda Kingdom, led by Chief Kazembe, settled in the Lake Moero and Lwapula Valley region. This territory later became part of the Kingdom of Kazembe.

  • January 1801: Establishment of Momba in Zambia.

  • January 1801: Establishment of Kahare in Zambia.

  • January 1846: Liswani becomes the first king of the chiefdom of Masubia.

  • January 1857: The Yeke Kingdom was founded by chief Msidi (also spelled M'Siri, Mziri, Msiri) who had immigrated from Unyamwezi (central Tanzania).

  • June 1890: Seeking the improvement of the military protection and with the intention to sign a treaty with the British Government, King Lewanika signed on 26 June 1890 the Lochner concession putting Barotseland under the protection of the British South Africa Company.
