Was one of the many semi-autonomous principalities of the Kievan Rus' that became independent following the death of Mstislav I of Kiev in 1132. It was centered on the region of Volhynia.

Establishment

January 1133: Following the death of Mstislav I of Kiev in 1132, the semi-autonomous states of the Kievan Rus' were de facto independent.

Following the death of Mstislav I of Kiev in 1132, the semi-autonomous states of the Kievan Rus' were de facto independent.

January 1158: The Lutsk Principality separated from the Volyn principality in 1157.

January 1171: The Belz Principality arose in 1170 with the center in the city of Belz.

Disestablishment

January 1200: Following the death of the prince of Halych Volodymyr Yaroslavovych in 1199, the Halych line of the Rurik dynasty had become extinct and the prince of Volhynia, Roman the Great annexed the principality, moved his seat to the city of Old Halych and formed the united Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia.
