Leopoldo II was the Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1824 to 1859. During his reign, he faced significant challenges, including the Italian Wars of Independence. These wars, which took place from 1848 to 1849, saw various Italian states fighting for independence from foreign rule. Although Leopoldo II initially supported the liberal reforms demanded by the revolutionaries, he eventually aligned himself with the Austrian Empire, leading to his forced abdication in 1859.
