Vytautas Landsbergis was the first President of the Republic of Lithuania, serving from March 11, 1990, to February 25, 1993. During his tenure, Lithuania faced significant challenges, including the Soviet Union's attempt to suppress its independence. Although no major wars occurred during his presidency, the most notable conflict was the January Events of 1991, when Soviet forces attacked the Vilnius TV Tower and the Lithuanian Radio and Television building, resulting in the loss of 14 lives. Landsbergis played a crucial role in leading Lithuania's resistance against Soviet aggression and ultimately securing its independence.
