Emperor Meiji was the ruler of the Japanese Empire from 1868 to 1912. During his reign, Japan underwent a period of rapid modernization and westernization known as the Meiji Restoration. The most important wars that occurred during his tenure were the Boshin War (1868-1869), which marked the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the restoration of imperial rule, and the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895), where Japan emerged victorious and gained control over Taiwan and parts of China.
