Maximilian Franz of Austria was the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne from 1784 to 1801. During his tenure, he faced the tumultuous times of the French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802) and the War of the First Coalition (1792-1797). These conflicts brought significant challenges to his rule, as the French Revolutionary forces invaded the Archbishopric of Cologne in 1794, leading to the occupation of the territory and the subsequent dissolution of the archbishopric in 1801. Despite his efforts to maintain his position, Maximilian Franz's rule ultimately came to an end due to the political and military upheavals of the time.
