Vitiges, King (Kingdom of the Ostrogoths) : All Data
Vitiges was the King of the Ostrogoths who ruled from 537 to 540. During his reign, he faced significant challenges, including the Gothic War (535-554) against the Byzantine Empire. This war saw the Ostrogoths, led by Vitiges, defending their kingdom in Italy against the Byzantine forces under General Belisarius. Another important conflict that occurred during Vitiges' rule was the Siege of Rome (537-538), where the Ostrogoths unsuccessfully attempted to recapture the city from the Byzantines. Despite his efforts, Vitiges was ultimately unable to maintain control over Italy, and his reign marked the beginning of the decline of the Ostrogothic Kingdom.
