Tự Đức was the fourth emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty, ruling over Vietnam from 1847 to 1883. During his reign, Vietnam faced several significant conflicts, including the Cochinchina Campaign (1858-1862) and the Tonkin Campaign (1873-1883). These wars were part of France's efforts to expand its colonial influence in Indochina. Despite his initial resistance, Tự Đức eventually signed the Treaty of Saigon in 1862, which ceded three southern provinces to the French. The Tonkin Campaign, which began in 1873, aimed to suppress Vietnamese resistance to French rule in the northern region. Tự Đức's reign was marked by these conflicts and the increasing encroachment of French colonialism in Vietnam.
