Franz Ludwig von Erthal was a Prince-Bishop who ruled over the Würzburg Prince-Bishopric from 1779 to 1795. During his tenure, he witnessed the outbreak of the French Revolutionary Wars, which lasted from 1792 to 1802. Although the wars extended beyond his reign, they significantly impacted his rule, as the French Revolutionary forces invaded the region in 1796 and occupied Würzburg until 1803. Despite the brevity of his reign, Franz Ludwig von Erthal faced the challenges and consequences of the French Revolutionary Wars, which ultimately led to the dissolution of the Würzburg Prince-Bishopric.
