John George I was the Elector of Saxony from 1611 until his death in 1656. During his reign, he faced the tumultuous period of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), which greatly impacted his rule. As a Protestant ruler, he initially remained neutral but eventually joined the Protestant Union in 1631. He played a significant role in the war, particularly during the Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631 and the Battle of Lützen in 1632. These battles marked crucial turning points in the conflict, with the former resulting in a decisive Protestant victory and the latter witnessing the death of the Swedish king, Gustavus Adolphus. Despite the challenges posed by the war, John George I managed to maintain his position as Elector of Saxony throughout this period.
