Leopold II, King (Belgian Congo) : All Data
Leopold II was the King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909. During his reign, Leopold II was known for his colonization of the Congo Free State, which he personally owned as his private property. This period of colonization, known as the Scramble for Africa, lasted from the late 19th century until the early 20th century. While Leopold II's rule did not directly coincide with any major wars, it was marked by significant unrest and violence in the Congo Free State, including the Congo Arab War (1892-1894) and the Congo Free State-British War (1894-1898). These conflicts were part of the larger context of European imperialism in Africa during Leopold II's reign.
