Francisco Franco was a Spanish military general who served as the Prime Minister and de facto dictator of the Spanish State from 1939 until his death in 1975. During his rule, he led the Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), a conflict between the Republicans and Nationalists that resulted in his rise to power. Franco's tenure also witnessed Spain's involvement in World War II (1939-1945), where he maintained a policy of neutrality despite being sympathetic to the Axis powers. Additionally, he suppressed various revolts and uprisings, including the Basque separatist movement and the Catalan independence movement, throughout his rule.
