Carlo I was the Duke of Mantova, reigning from 1628 to 1637. The War of the Mantuan Succession erupted in 1628 when the Gonzaga family's rule over Mantova was challenged, resulting in a power struggle between various European powers. The Thirty Years' War, which began in 1618, also overlapped with Carlo I's reign and was a complex conflict involving numerous European states.
