Maurice, Duke and later Elector of Saxony, ruled over the Duchy and Electorate of Saxony from 1541 to 1553. During his reign, he played a significant role in the Schmalkaldic War (1546-1547), a conflict between the Protestant Schmalkaldic League and the Holy Roman Empire led by Emperor Charles V. Maurice initially supported the Emperor but later switched sides, leading the Protestant forces to victory at the Battle of Mühlberg in 1547. This decisive battle marked a turning point in the war and solidified Maurice's position as a prominent Protestant leader.
