Mikhail Gorbachev was the General Secretary of the Communist Party who ruled over the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. During his tenure, the most significant war was the Soviet-Afghan War, which lasted from 1979 to 1989. This conflict was consistent with Gorbachev's rule as he inherited the war and eventually withdrew Soviet troops in 1989. Another notable event during his rule was the Baltic Way, a peaceful protest in 1989 where approximately two million people formed a human chain across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to demand independence from the Soviet Union.
