Bảo Đại was the last emperor of the Empire of Vietnam, ruling from 1926 to 1945. During his reign, he faced significant challenges, including the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and World War II (1939-1945). As a Japanese puppet ruler, Bảo Đại's reign coincided with the Japanese occupation of Vietnam, which began in 1940. While he initially cooperated with the Japanese, he later abdicated in 1945, following the end of World War II and the defeat of Japan. This marked the end of the Empire of Vietnam and the beginning of a new era in Vietnamese history.
