Menelik II was the Emperor of the Ethiopian Empire from 1889 to 1913. During his reign, he successfully defended Ethiopia against foreign colonization in the First Italo-Ethiopian War (1895-1896) and expanded the empire's territory through the conquest of neighboring regions, including the Battle of Adwa in 1896. This decisive victory against Italy not only secured Ethiopia's independence but also marked the first time an African nation defeated a European colonial power. Menelik II's leadership and military prowess solidified Ethiopia's position as one of the few African nations to remain independent during the Scramble for Africa.
