Æthelred I, King (kingdom of wessex) : All Data
Æthelred I was the King of Wessex who reigned from 865 to 871. During his rule, he faced the significant challenge of defending his kingdom against Viking invasions. The most important wars that occurred during his tenure were the Viking invasions of Wessex, including the Battle of Reading in 871 and the Battle of Ashdown in the same year. These conflicts were consistent with Æthelred I's reign, as they took place within the known timespan of his rule. Despite the challenges, Æthelred I's leadership and military efforts laid the foundation for his successor, Alfred the Great, to eventually turn the tide against the Vikings and secure Wessex's survival.
