Burgred was the King of the Kingdom of Mercia during the period of 852-874. His reign was marked by significant conflicts, including the Viking invasions that plagued England during the 9th century. One of the most important wars that occurred during his tenure was the Battle of Repton in 873, where the Great Heathen Army, led by the Viking leaders Ivar the Boneless and Halfdan Ragnarsson, defeated Burgred's forces and took control of Mercia. This event marked a turning point in the Viking conquest of England and ultimately led to the downfall of Burgred's reign.
