Louis-Jules Trochu was the President of the Government of National Defense during the French Third Republic from September 4, 1870, to January 28, 1871. His rule coincided with the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), a conflict between France and Prussia that resulted in the fall of the Second French Empire and the establishment of the Third Republic. Trochu's tenure also witnessed the Paris Commune uprising in 1871, a radical socialist and revolutionary government that briefly controlled Paris before being suppressed by the French army.
