Michael Asen I was the Tsar of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1254 to 1256. During his reign, he faced significant military challenges, including the Byzantine-Bulgarian War of 1255-1256. This conflict erupted when the Byzantine Empire, under Emperor Theodore II Laskaris, launched an invasion of Bulgaria in an attempt to regain lost territories. Despite initial setbacks, Michael Asen I successfully defended his realm and repelled the Byzantine forces, preserving the independence of the Second Bulgarian Empire.
