Icon Michael VIII, Emperor (eastern roman empire) : All Data

Michael VIII was the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 1261 to 1282. During his reign, he successfully restored Byzantine rule over Constantinople, which had been under Latin occupation since the Fourth Crusade. The most significant war that occurred during his tenure was the Byzantine–Sicilian War, which lasted from 1266 to 1268. This conflict saw Michael VIII attempting to regain control over Sicily from the Kingdom of Sicily. Another notable war was the Byzantine–Bulgarian War of 1279-1280, where Michael VIII fought against Tsar Ivailo of Bulgaria in an attempt to expand Byzantine territory. These wars demonstrate Michael VIII's determination to reclaim lost territories and strengthen the Byzantine Empire.
