In the late 16th century, the English established a permanent plantation colony on Tortola and the surrounding islands. From 1603 it was a colony of the Personal Union of England and Scotland. It was lost to the Dutch in 1648. Tortola is a Caribbean island which today is part of the British Virgin islands.
