On 30 October 1918, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Imam Yahya Muhammad of the al-Qasimi dynasty declared northern Yemen an independent sovereign state.

    1. World War I

  • March 1958: The United Arab Republic was a sovereignstate formed by the union of Egypt and Syria in 1958. The same year, the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen (North Yemen), which had already signed a defense pact with Egypt, joined with the new state in 1958 in a loose confederation called the United Arab States.

  • December 1961: In 1961, the union between Egypt and Syria, known as the United Arab Republic, and the confederation between Iraq and Jordan, known as the Arab Federation, dissolved. This marked a setback for the pan-Arabism movement led by historical figures such as Gamal Abdel Nasser and King Hussein of Jordan.
