Was a kingdom in modern-day Indian state of Odisha, founded in the mid 15th century. The state was placed under British administration from 1818. When the ruler or the state died without a direct male heir in 1849, the British seized the state under the doctrine of lapse.
Establishment
January 1494: In 1493, Sambalpur State was established by Balaram Deo, a Rajput from the Chauhan dynasty and the younger brother of Raja Narsingh Deo, the ruler of the kingdom of Patna. The territory of Sambalpur State expanded during this time.

Was a series of wars fought between the British East India Company and Maratha Empire in India.
1.1.1.Third Anglo-Maratha War
Was the final and decisive conflict between the English East India Company and the Maratha Empire in India. The war left the Company in control of most of India.
January 1818: British commanders began arriving with reinforcements: Lieutenant Colonel Rahan on 29 November, Major Pittman on 5 December, and Colonel Doveton on 12 December. The British counterattack was severe and Appa Saheb was forced to surrender. The British lost 300 men, of which 24 were Europeans. The Marathas lost an equal number. A treaty was signed on 9 January 1818. Appa Saheb was allowed to rule over nominal territories with several restrictions. Most of his territory, including the forts, was now controlled by the British.
January 1551: According to legend Sarangarh state was founded in the first century AD by Gond ancestors that had migrated from Bhandara. It was originally a dependency of the Ratanpur Kingdom and later became one of the eighteen Garhjat states under Sambalpur State.
January 1801: Sambalpur was ruled by the Chauhan dynasty till 1800 when Sambalpur came under the Bhonsle dynasty of Nagpur.
January 1819: In 1818 Sarangarh became a British protectorate.
January 1822: Gangpur was a feudatory estate of Sambalpur. In 1821 the British authorities canceled the feudatory rights of Sambalpur over Gangpur and the ruler was granted a sanad, by which Gangpur was recognized as a state.
Disestablishment
January 1849: The Sambalpur State was annexed by the British East India Company.
